What are Nicotine Strips and Can They Help You Quit Smoking?

Nicotine strips are a form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

They are designed to help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms when stopping smoking by releasing a small amount of nicotine.

The strips can be used as an alternative to other forms of oral NRTs like nicotine gum, mouth spray or lozenges.

They come in a strip of thin film. They can also be used in smoke-free environments to curb your cravings to smoke.

How do nicotine strips work?

They release a small amount of nicotine through the strip. You press the strip against the roof of your mouth and allow it to dissolve, this takes around 3 minutes. The film should not be chewed or swallowed. Obviously you cannot eat or drink while the strip is in your mouth.

The nicotine get’s into your bloodstream through the lining of your mouth. And it is claimed that it stops your urge to smoke in just 30 seconds.

The strips only come in 2.5mg strength with mint flavouring. You cannot exceed 15 strips in a day.

You take the strips as often as you need them. During weeks 1-6, 1 strip is advised every 1-2 hours, weeks 7-9, 1 strip every 2-4 hours, weeks 10-12, 1 strip every 4-8 hours and weeks 10-12, 1 strip every 4-8 hours. When you are at the point of taking just 1-2 strips per day, you can stop smoking completely.

After 12 weeks you can take 1-2 strips to keep you from smoking if you need to.

Of course, as with any NRT, you can stop smoking completely at any time you feel comfortable to do so during the 12 weeks.

Be sure to check the packaging for any other side effects, warnings, and for further usage instructions.

How can nicotine strips help you quit smoking?

They can stop your urges to smoke and help with withdrawal symptoms. They can be used on their own to slowly wean you off your nicotine addiction. Or they can be used with another aid or technique to make quitting easier.

According to Netdoctor.co.uk using NRTs has been shown to almost double your chances of successfully quitting smoking” although the success rates using nicotine strips is unclear.

Whether you use them or not depends on what you prefer, you may prefer strips over gum, lozenges or mouth spray. Over a quit period of 12 weeks, the strips can work out cheaper than nicotine gum and lozenges.
