The Nicotine lozenge is another form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). It is available in different forms,
flavours and strengths. Like all NRTs, the lozenge is designed to slowly wean you off nicotine and reduce cravings. It is used by those that prefer it over nicotine gum, it is a little more discreet as you don’t need to chew it.
How does the nicotine lozenge work?
The lozenge dissolves slowly in the mouth releasing nicotine that is absorbed through blood vessels in your mouth. Nicotine takes longer to get into your system than it would with a cigarette. With a cigarette, nicotine is released into the blood through the lungs and takes just seconds to get to your brain.
The lozenge comes in either the 2mg strength, which you take if you smoke your first cigarette more than 30 minutes after waking up. Or the 4mg strength which you take if you smoke your first cigarette within 30 minutes of waking up.
You allow the lozenge to slowly dissolve in the mouth (around 30 minutes). You don’t swallow or chew the lozenge and it keeps working in your system once dissolved in the mouth.
It advised not to eat or drink 15 minutes before and after finishing the lozenge.
Nicorette advise a 12 week program with 9 lozenges for the first 6 weeks.

Do nicotine lozenges help you quit smoking?
The lozenge works in a similar way to nicotine gum, it occupies the mouth instead of a cigarette so this helps. The dosage and 12 week program is also the same. It could have a placebo effect so this has to be taken into account as to how effective it really is. Lozenges may also help with other aids or techniques to quit smoking.
According to nicorette, it triples your chances of quitting. For a 12 week program it won’t be cheap though. Some may not like the taste of lozenges either.
I haven’t been able to find any recent credible studies to say how effective it is to quit smoking for the short and long term.
